Staying Hydrated In The Heat of Texas

By: CrossFit Fortify
Living in Texas, you know the weather here can be a little crazy. From bouts of extreme heat and drought, to out of nowhere torrential downpours, everything here really is bigger. That's why it's so dire to keep hydrated during your workouts, as the summer heat can be unforgiving.

Knowing your body and when it needs water

Did you know that dehydration can change your mood? If you start to notice a lack of focus, or your energy and possibly even your mood shifting, these may all be signs of dehydration. You want to catch these signs early as by the time your mouth feels dry you will already be dehydrated. Be sure to pay attention to how your body feels, it is important as an active person to know the signs it gives you.

Methods of hydration

Knowing is half the battle, so know that you are aware of what dehydration feels like, what should you do to help out and get back your workout? There are many myths among the facts when it comes to hydration, so let's talk about a few different methods, and what actually works.
  • Apple Cider vinegar - There are many possible benefits to this well-known trick, the trouble is most are unconfirmed. Our own Texas A&M has done some research regarding this popular home remedy. The good news is there isn't much harm in trying, so if you can stand the taste, go for it.
  • Salt - This one is true. If you are sweating out some of your much-needed sodium, it's going to need replacing.
  • Gatorade - This drink will keep you hydrated, but it does have some pitfalls, sugar being the biggest. It's also only effective for high-intensity workouts.
  • Water - Ding-ding, we have a winner. The body is made up of 60% water and nothing beats the basics. Sip on it throughout the day, and get roughly 8 cups depending on your own needs.
Keeping hydrated can be tough, but whether you are outside or inside, it is equally important to keep you going throughout the day.
